Every lantern in the house is lit tonight, and the rain has not stopped since dusk. 🕯️🌧️ From the top of the old stair you can see the whole room below: a hundred small flames on the tables, along the sills and down the long bar, the bottles shining on the back shelves, and the big stone hearth burning low and wide over a deep bed of embers, with the antlers above the mantel catching its light. Through the tall windows the rain is running down the glass, and beyond it the dark water of the loch lies under the mountains, their tops lost in low night cloud. In here it is dry and warm. The flagstones are holding the lamplight, the old maps of the glens hang on the walls, and one leather armchair has been drawn up to the fire, with a tartan blanket over its arm and a lantern lit on the little table beside it. The chair is yours.
