The plague had claimed thousands of lives, and the Thirty Years’ War had consumed many parts of the continent. Amid such epochal events, an inheritance dispute in the northern Italian Duchy of Mantua attracted, like a political vortex, the attention of the great powers of Europe and dragged them into a conflict they all wanted to avoid. This dispute quickly escalated into a thrilling war characterized by political intrigue and family entanglements. The War of the Mantuan Succession culminated in the siege of Mantua, a heavily fortified island city that was unintentionally quarantined by the blockade and thus spared from the plague—at least for a while. This is how contemporary historiography tells the story of the staggering siege of Mantua.
