Pioneer PD-4050 suffering from common missing lens problem

Since working on a Pioneer PD-103 earlier this year, I've been aware of the problem that afflicts the company's 1980s and 1990s CD players - the adhesive used to hold in their objective lenses fails, leading to the lenses dropping out. This of course means that the player no longer reads a disc and either gets thrown away or listed on eBay as faulty. I've seen a number of players that I suspected were suffering from this issue, but I avoided them in case the lenses were missing altogether. Perhaps people would try to repair them and the lens would drop out, or the lens would find its way through a hole in the bottom of the unit. But when this PD-4050 came up for sale I thought it was worth the risk - although it turned out that due to some shipping damage, I had an intermittent power problem to deal with as well.
