When to Use the 85mm (And When NOT To)

The 85mm prime lens is often regarded as the perfect lens for portrait photography, offering creamy bokeh, flattering compression, and beautiful background blur. But in real life, when should you actually use an 85mm lens for portraits and everyday photography – and when is it the wrong choice? In this honest 85mm lens review, I look at how this focal length really behaves: when the 85mm shines for portrait photography, when it holds you back, and how it can still lead to meaningful images beyond just “pretty headshots.” In this video, I spend time living with an 85mm prime and ask a simple question: Can you actually shoot A LOT with this lens… or is it really just a niche portrait tool? Along the way, I discovered that 85mm isn’t just about “pretty headshots.” The compression, the intimacy, and the way it forces you to move your body and choose your background very carefully… it all changes how you see the everyday. __________________________________________________________________________ Music: Whispers in the Wind by Tokyo Music Walker License: Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0 Free Download / Stream: Music promoted by Audio Library: ________________________________________________________________________ Affiliate Links: 📸 RECOMMENDED 85MM LENSES: • Sony 85mm f/1.8: • Viltrox 85 mm f/1.8: • Canon RF 85mm f/2: • Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S: • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art: • Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 🔍 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: ✅ Why the 85mm is called the "portrait lens" ✅ How compression and perspective work at this focal length ✅ Surprising uses beyond portraits (including street photography and landscapes) ✅ Exactly when NOT to use an 85mm (groups, tight spaces, wide landscape vistas) ✅ How to choose between f/1.4 vs f/1.8 versions ✅ The one-lens challenge that will teach you more than any tutorial ✅ Why the 85mm makes you a better photographer (even when you're not using it) 📸 RECOMMENDED 85MM LENSES: [Affiliate links:] • Sony 85mm f/1.8: [link] • Canon RF 85mm f/2: [link] • Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S: [link] • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art: [link] • Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2: [link] ✉️ WORK WITH ME: Feeling stuck creatively?
