Angered at their lack of progress, Captain Mauch (Michael Keaton) splits up the partners, sending Terry to traffic duty and Allen to beat patrol. Despite that, Allen (Will Ferrell) still works the case on his own and convinces Terry (Mark Wahlberg) to rejoin him. They meet Mauch at Bed Bath & Beyond, his second job, where he admits he has been holding off on the case because Ershon (Steve Coogan) has high-profile connections that could ruin him, so Mauch allows them to finish the case off-the-books.
