[ About This Video ] Talking with Kunihira Kawachi gave us a deep sense of what it means to be a true craftsman. He is a man who has devoted his life to creating exceptional Japanese swords, driven neither by money nor recognition. While he has now earned many awards and achieved great success, throughout our interview, we could sense passion and dedication beyond ordinary levels. Perhaps this spirit embodies Japanese craftsmanship (Shokunin), which is now almost lost. We visited Kunihira Kawachi's workshop, where we met him for the second time. The first time was at a museum where he gave a lecture about swords, which we featured in a previous video. We plan to divide this visit into about three videos. [ Who is Kunihira Kawachi? ] Kunihira Kawachi (河内國平) is the 14th-generation swordsmith of the Kawachi family, born in 1941. He studied Soshu-den under Shohei Miyairi, a living national treasure, and Bizen-den under Masamine Sumitani, another living national treasure. Kunihira has produced numerous artistic works, and among his accomplishments is the successful reproduction of "Midare-Utsuri (乱映り)," a characteristic of ancient swords that is said to be impossible to achieve with modern Tamahagane. He has been awarded both the Masamune Prize (正宗賞) and the Mukansa (無監査) title, the highest honours in the Japanese sword world, which signifies his work no longer requires judgment or examination for exhibition. Our Tamahagane's Honyaki knife project is ongoing at the same time. Instagram Follow us on what we do daily!
