Atwood Machine with Blocks Attached at Two Different Radii | Find Equilibrium and Acceleration

Two Blocks hang from a pulley. Each block attaches to the pulley at a different radius. The pulley is free to rotate about an axis. In this problem we will solve for the conditions such that the pulley will remain balanced in static equilibrium as well as the acceleration of each of the blocks in the situation where the blocks are not in equilibrium. The solution to this problem focuses on the concept of torque, largely as it applies to Newton's Second Law. We will consider rotational moment of inertia, angular acceleration and create a system of equations to solve for the linear acceleration of each block as well as the angular acceleration of the pulley. This problem commonly comes up in introductory physics courses such as AP Physics and early college mechanics. It also serves as the foundation of problems that appear on the JEE and A Levels Exams.
