Here is an idea for a single segment display. It uses one lit segment, with a "zero" permanently displayed to indicate an off state. The only segment, which shows the digit 1 to indicate a binary 'on' state, will become more prominent than the zero via silhouette effect since the zero is not illuminated in any way. A simpler alternative would be not to have the zero at all, instead using the absence of the 1 to indicate zero, however I wanted to try and get both binary states in their numerical form, instead of using a non-numerical bulb.
