The Age of Technology was humanity’s golden age and During this period, humanity spread across the galaxy and creating incredible technological wonders. Artificial intelligences, called Men of Iron, were invented and used widespread, serving humanity as their serfs. However, this golden age ended in catastrophe. The Men of Iron turned against humanity and in the chaos, the Golden age collapsed, innumerable star systems were lost, and much of the knowledge of the Dark Age was destroyed. After the collapse of interstellar trade and communication, the galaxy entered the Age of Strife. Human worlds were largely cut off from one another due to the loss of navigational knowledge and the rise of the Warp storms, which made long-distance travel almost impossible. Without a unifying empire, worlds fell into anarchy, war, or stagnation, and many regressed technologically. In this fragmented galaxy, isolated human worlds often developed independently into small empires, city-states, or technocracies and thus, By the time of the Great Crusade, many of these isolated civilizations had grown into burgeoning empires and confederations, but were all ultimately wiped out or integrated into the wider Imperium.
