Here's a quick demo on how to tap 10BASE5 cable with a vampire tap. I should note that this tapping procedure has the risk of dropping packets on the network. There is a brief moment where the drill bit could short out the medium. The network should recover afterward though. Real coring tools for doing this don't drill all the way to the center conductor, I'm told. This prevents that issue. The main purpose of the coring tool is to remove the shield where the spike enters the cable.
