I'm out Rat Shooting tonight, lots of action and some amazing fox footage too. I last visited this poultry farm 6 months ago, a few weeks after they began using a new poison. They had tried just about every poison on the market with poor results, hence why I had a regular shooting program in place for them. Well, this new poison was working a treat, there was hardly a rat to be seen. Very happy for the farmer but a little disappointed as I love this type of work. Fast forward to a few days ago, a call from the farmer advising the rats had wised up to the poison and causing issues again. She also had a problem fox coming in and regularly killing chickens during the day . Just as the sun goes down, the rats start coming out. At first, into the pens and down to where the feeders have been during the day. Strangely, on this property, soon after the shooting starts, the rats make their way up into the trees. The tricky part about this job is having to shoot them at distances as close as 3m due to their location in the small chook pens. With my rifle precisely zeroed for 5m, 10m and 20m. The next challenge is finding a gap in the wire mesh in order to humanely dispatch the rodents with a clean headshot. Surprisingly, it's far more difficult than shooting them at say 20 or with the dialed down air rifle is certainly the go-to method in situations like these. Running the 1280 resolution HikMicro Stellar SX60 on the 22 calibre air rifle for the rats and my Ruger Ranch II chambered in 300 Blackout running 190gr subsonics for any any foxes that showed up. A few hours of work resulted in just over 60 rats being removed and 3 foxes. All in all, a fantastic result and one very grateful farmer.
