In this video, we’ve got a John Deere riding mower with a Kohler Command engine that turns over but won’t start. I show you how I diagnose every mower the same way, no matter the brand – Husqvarna, Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, or John Deere – and no matter if it’s a Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Kawasaki, or Honda engine. We spray brake cleaner into the carburetor, the mower fires up and dies, which tells us right away it’s a fuel problem. Power was getting to the anti-backfire solenoid, but it was stuck from bad gas. I first tried a cheap aftermarket carburetor – and it flooded the engine! The final fix was replacing it with another carburetor, and the mower runs perfectly again.
