Could the Crowdstrike security vulnerability that crashed millions of Windows computers in 2024 be forcing Microsoft to lock 3rd party drivers out of Windows? What makes macOS, Windows, and Linux driver security so different? Why is IPv6 support still so uncommon? In this engineer Q&A we break down the latest cybersecurity and connectivity tech news, why IPv6 adoption has been so slow, and recent vulnerabilities like the Windows SharePoint hack with Speedify CEO Alex Gizis and CTO, engineer, connectivity expert Brian Prodoehl. We look back at the infamous CrowdStrike bug from July 2024 that crashed over 8 million Windows PCs into BSOD loops and grounded thousands of flights. One year later, what’s changed? CrowdStrike has improved internal testing and update rollout processes and is reducing kernel-level access in future builds, Microsoft introduced quicker machine recovery during boot, and is working on more options for security tools to work without kernel access, including a toolkit for building antivirus software outside the kernel. But legal and antitrust constraints still prevent Microsoft from fully locking down the kernel like Apple does, due to their role as a security vendor. Plus, as always we look at what’s new with Speedify and answer user tech questions! Got questions for the Speedify engineers? Ask us live on our next stream, every Wednesday at 10am eastern.
