Occupying the middle of the circuit before a corner sends a message to potential overtakers that you're going to fight for your position, and they're going to have to try a bit harder to take your place than a simple late brake up the inside. Easy for beginners and intermediates to do, it costs time, but it's not tremendously difficult.
