The certificate is the heart of SSL/TLS and a key authentication technology for the internet. This video explains, at a high level, how "Secure Sockets Layer" (SSL) and its current incarnation "Transport Layer Security" (TLS) incorporated the certificate to create secure, and — more importantly — trustworthy connections between a client and server.
