Apple’s Rhapsody Era — Mac OS X Server 1.0 on PowerMac G3 (Part 1)

Sponsored by PCBWay: In 1999, Apple shipped Mac OS X Server 1.0, better known by its codename Rhapsody. It was the missing link between NeXTSTEP and the Mac OS we know today. In this first part, I set up a Blue & White PowerMac G3, restore missing components like the ZIP drive, and replace its failing CD-ROM before diving into the installation of Rhapsody. Along the way, we’ll see how Apple mixed the familiar look of Mac OS 8 with the UNIX core inherited from NeXT, and why this release was such an unusual step in Apple’s operating system history. We’ll also look at multi-boot preparations with Mac OS 8.6, Mac OS 9, Rhapsody, and the first release of OS X — setting the stage for deeper exploration in part 2. What do you think about Apple’s Rhapsody era? Let me know in the comments!
