DIY Installing Google Nest 4th Gen learning thermostat at home in Los Angeles

We self installed a Google nest 4th generation learning thermostat replacing our old Google thermostat that was over 10 years old. we had to replace the old thermostat not because it was broken but because Google set the device to expire and out of date that it would not longer be able to link to the internet and properly function to have LADWP energy conservation #greenlove #ecofriendly program. Google did offer a discount from $250 each to $150 each. The install was relatively straight forward via the Google instructions via the app! Make sure you scan the code behind the device before you install it on the wall to save a step. Good luck on DIY! The Nest 4th Generation Learning Thermostat offers a range of benefits by combining smart technology with energy efficiency. It learns a household’s temperature preferences over time and automatically adjusts settings, helping to optimize comfort while reducing energy usage. Integration with mobile apps enables remote control, so users can adjust heating and cooling from anywhere. Additionally, the thermostat works with other smart home devices, provides detailed energy reports, and uses sensors and geofencing to ensure heating or cooling only occurs when needed, potentially lowering utility bills and environmental impact. One significant drawback in modern device design is when products are intentionally engineered for obsolescence, meaning the company sets a point at which the device becomes ineffective despite still functioning mechanically. This can occur through software deactivation, discontinuation of essential services, or refusal to support system updates, rendering the product useless for its intended operation. Such practices can frustrate consumers, create unnecessary waste, and undermine trust in the brand, as perfectly working hardware is forced into retirement for reasons unrelated to physical durability or performance. For us this issued has happened for the Nest thermostat and the smoke detectors. Overall we are happy with the performance of the google nest products, but do not like that we are forced to upgrade to a new device just because Google sets the standard rather than the device working the life of its mechanical components. This seems to be a wasteful and greedy practice of Google in my opinion.
