My interpretation of the van scene is that Mike, in some way, understood. And yes, I do think the feelings are mutual. That's why he looks so heart broken when Will pushes him into the monolouge in episode 9, because then he realized.. "it wasn't Will's feelings, after all. It was actually El's."
