How we built an EPR Spectrometer in the lab - ESR Spectroscopy

We take you through our benchtop EPR Spectrometer, designed and built from components and instruments in the lab at Lancaster University Physics Department in the UK. The experiment performs radio frequency, continuous wave EPR Spectroscopy, also known as ESR Spectroscopy. We discuss the physics, circuit diagram, instrumentation and set-up along with component design and build, including machining some parts in the mechanical workshop and making a resonator in electronics. We've achieved some great results and data with this set up, which is part of Prof Edward Laird's Research Group, specialising in quantum electronics. You can find out more about the group here: And find out more about the project of which this spectrometer is a part here: Finally, find out about the excellent facilities and work in the Lancaster University Physics Department here: Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 00:54 EPR Theory 03:36 Circuit Diagram 07:24 Instrumentation and Components 11:30 3D Design in Autodesk Inventor 13:59 Differential Screw and Machining 16:45 Resonator Design and Build 19:39 How it Works 21:19 Lock-In Amplifier and Signal 26:45 Demo - Critical Coupling 28:35 Demo - Measurement We'd like to express our utmost gratitude to Prof Edward Laird for making this video possible and for his advice and support of the project throughout. Additionally, for his vision, work and ideas which led to the inception of the project, and his tireless supervision of the many students (including those in this video) who have benefitted from working on it. Additionally, a special mention to Matthew Green, who doesn't appear in the video, but whose years of PhD work, including months of Python programming, have made the project what it is today. He too is a tireless supporter of those in the lab, and we thank him. Systemic Creative provides business consultancy, experiential learning, and scientific research, based around systemic organisational cognition and consciousness. We’ve pioneered an approach based on viewing organisations as conscious, non-linear, living organisms. Throughout all of our interventions, we focus on providing a measurable, tangible route to success for clients based upon increasing this level of consciousness to create a stable bedrock of interdependent growth. We help to build companies from the ground up, with four successful start-ups in our growing portfolio, and support existing businesses of all sizes to achieve more and feel better doing it, opening the floodgates to stable success. Our unique experiential organisational development programme has been enjoyed by, and contributed to, a huge range of organisations. On our website, you’ll find testimonials from the University of Birmingham, Northrop Grumman Aerospace, Hallmark Cards, a self-employed therapist, a small sign language karaoke business and the minister of a church. Our principles and protocols can help and guide any organisation looking to improve. There are few business consultancies which are also directly engaged in the fundamental physical research which underpins not only the cutting edge of their field, but also the cutting edge of human knowledge. We bring a unique level of insight to our services and products and provide things which no-one else can. #spectroscopy #spectrometer #ESRspectroscopy #EPRspectroscopy #EPRspectrometer #epr #esr #benchtopEPR #physics #physicslab #laboratory
