UTIs and Memory Loss

Can a urinary tract infection (UTI) cause memory loss? Geriatricians Leslie Kernisan, MD and Chrissy Kistler, MD, continue their discussion, focusing on how to know when confusion or weakness is being caused by UTIs, and how to diagnose and treat UTIs in more vulnerable older adults, such as those in nursing homes. Discover how UTIs can mimic confusion or memory loss and learn why geriatricians always consider whether there is asymptomatic bacteriuria (“colonized bladder”) in these cases. The geriatricians also cover managing urinary tract infections in older adults with Alzheimer’s and related dementia, explain when to use antibiotics, and discuss how to prevent recurrent UTIs.
