When mechanics of the TMJ are altered, typically jaw and tongue musculature are working too hard together to stabilize the jaw, often in an asymmetrical position. Gaining independence between the tongue and jaw musculature can help to improve movement of the TMJ. The TMJ can be an irritable and sensitive area, so proceed with caution when attempting to progress with myofunctional exercises.
