How I Created 2D Pixel Art Water For My Indie Game

Wishlist Idle Fisher on Steam now! In this video, I break down how I completely revamped the water in my indie fishing game — turning it from a flat, boring mess into something with depth, refraction, ripples, and reflections. The process involved separating the water layer from the land, using a height map to simulate depth-based color changes, faking caustics with a tiling texture, and experimenting with different techniques for creating ripples, including texture displacement using a DUDV map. I also tackled reflections by creating a custom texture for the underside of objects, and finished things off with a hand-animated tide effect along the shoreline.
