Hop aboard a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) M3 train and enjoy a complete, real-time journey in late May from Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn to Jamaica Station in Queens, covering the "Atlantic Shuttle" service which provides passengers with regular connections to Jamaica, where they can transfer to the JFK Airport AirTrain and other Long Island Rail Road Lines to points east. Filmed through the publicly accessible front window of a set of M3 cars, this video offers an engineer's-eye view of a fascinating urban-area commuter rail line with tunnels, viaducts, and surface-level trackage. 🛤️About the Atlantic Branch: The Atlantic Branch is an electrified rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. It is the only LIRR line with revenue passenger service in the borough of Brooklyn. Partly underground and partly elevated, the Atlantic Branch runs from Atlantic Terminal in Downtown Brooklyn to Valley Stream, in Nassau County. The portion depicted in this video, from Atlantic Terminal to Jamaica, was constructed as part of the Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad and opened in 1836. The section between Atlantic Terminal and Bedford Avenue is underground along Atlantic Avenue. From there, the line is elevated above the median of Atlantic Avenue to Dewey Place (with a stop at Nostrand Avenue) before returning underground. At East New York, the line rises to street level to cross above the north-south, freight-only Bay Ridge Branch, then descends underground again. Between East New York and Jamaica, the closed but intact station at Woodhaven Junction is visible. At 121st Street in Richmond Hill, Queens, the line rises to street level and passes the Morris Park Facility before joining the elevated Main Line at Jamaica. 🚆 About the Long Island Rail Road M3: The M3 is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train built in the mid-1980s by Budd/Transit America for the Long Island Rail Road. The M3s have served reliably for decades, with many of them being retired by the new M9 cars in the late 2010s and early 2020s. However, a small subset of the fleet continues to operate long-term to ensure full service is provided. One notable, beloved feature of these cars is the passenger-accessible front window, offering a rare forward-facing view of the tracks ahead. While their days are numbered as the Long Island Rail Road moves forward to order replacement rolling stock, the M3s will continue to provide reliable service for at least a few more years.
