In this technical devlog for our upcoming mod, Project Capture, we're showcasing a solution to a long-standing limitation in Portal 2 modding: custom-colored Excursion Funnels. As many modders know, the funnel's signature blue/orange colors are hardcoded into the Source Engine, making it impossible to alter them through standard map or material edits. This video demonstrates our successful implementation. The key to this solution is a clever engine hack utilizing VMT Proxies. Crucially, this entire effect is achieved without any DLL modifications or server-side plugins. It is a pure engine-side solution that works within the confines of vanilla Portal 2, allowing for per-instance color definitions that can be controlled and changed dynamically via VScripts :P Our resources: Discord server:
