Update: If you're having difficulty performing what's done in this video, give this video a look for a demonstration with inputs Update 2: For the PC release of Sonic Mania, the emerald now speeds up when you get close to it in Mach 1 state (I suspect that this will also be the case in the patch console versions will receive soon). It is still possible to grab the emerald (generally when cutting a corner), but not as easy to do so in some cases. So apparently if you turn to the left/right and then jump while holding the opposite direction, you can travel faster than running normally would allow you to do. In some cases, you can also combine this with some bumper collisions to get even more speed. The end result is the ability to capture all of the chaos emeralds in the game in record time (and it's arguably easier than doing it normally, keep in mind you don't have to be as aggressive as I am for some of them).
