The Government is under huge pressure to explain why the high-profile trial of two men accused of spying for China collapsed just weeks before it was due to begin. Former parliamentary researcher Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry were charged under the Official Secrets Act, accused of gathering sensitive information for Beijing between December 2021 and February 2023. Both men have always maintained their innocence. The Government has been accused, by Kemi Badenoch amongst many others, of deliberately collapsing the trial because "the Prime Minister wants to suck up to Beijing" - something it has denied, saying the decision was made by the Crown Prosecution Service alone. The CPS said the case failed because key evidence referring to China as a national security threat was never provided. The Conservatives have attempted to blame Jonathan Powell, Starmer's National Security Adviser, for not providing the information but yesterday government minister Dan Jarvis told the Commons the responsibility lay with Powell's deputy, Matthew Collins. In today’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla and Jacob Rees-Mogg discuss how the government's handling of the case could spell serious trouble for and even bring down Keir Starmer’s premiership. They also speak to Tory MP Tom Tugendhat who points out that his party repeatedly described China as a threat to the country whilst in Government. ► Get the latest headlines: ► Sign up to the Telegraph's free new daily newsletter, From the Editor, bringing you the latest news, features and analysis from the Telegraph newsroom: and are websites of The Telegraph, the UK's best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news and analysis on UK and world events, business, sport, lifestyle and culture. #ChinaSpyCase #OfficialSecretsAct #UKPolitics #KeirStarmer #CPS #ChinaThreat #KemiBadenoch #JonathanPowell #MatthewCollins #DanJarvis #TomTugendhat #JacobReesMogg #CamillaTominey #TheDailyT #GovernmentScandal #NationalSecurity #BeijingRelations #ChinaEspionage #UKGovernment #PoliticalCrisis
