Olšanské hřbitovy were established in 1680 during a major plague epidemic, when Prague urgently needed burial space outside its city walls. Over time, the cemetery grew to become the largest in the city, covering 11 sections and more than 65 hectares. It is the resting place of generations — not only Czech citizens but also people of different faiths and nationalities. Many renowned writers, artists, politicians, and doctors are buried here. The grounds are filled with historic sculptures, mausoleums, Art Nouveau gravestones, and family tombs that tell the layered story of Prague’s past.
