Grand Theft Auto 4 has always been a pretty contentious game, but the advanced physics it used are of note I think. All of these different elements added together to make a game world that feels genuinely lived in and is fun to interact with. The world has a purpose unlike a lot of other open world games. There are a lot of games that come out even now with half-baked open worlds that don't even hold a candle to the amount of realism and innovation that GTA 4 shipped with in 2008.
